PA Standard 2.8.8-
Algebra and Functions
  • Chapter 4 created the standards – See Exhibit 1
  • Sample standards
    • 2.8.8. B- Discover, describe and generalize patterns …
    • 2.8.8. E- Select, and use a strategy to solve an equation or inequality, explain the solution and …
  • Why it’s important to you?
    • Concern for ‘traditional’ Algebra
    • Heavily weighted on PSSA Test

5
The PSSA – The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment
  • Assesses the students knowledge of the state standards
  • Consists of 85 Multiple Choice and 4 open-ended items
  • Ranks students among their peers in the state
  • Four Classifications
    • Advanced
    • Proficient
    • Basic
    • Below Basic

6
Mathematics in Context
  • Reform Math Program
  • Implemented in Bristol Township in the 1999/2000 School Year
  • Sponsored by the National Science Foundation
  • Partnership with LaSalle University
  • Integrated approach
7
Patterns and Figures
  • A book in the 8th grade Scope and Sequence
  • Addresses PA Standard 2.8.8
  • Part of the Algebra Strand
  • This book deals primarily with:
    • Investigating Patterns
    • Generalization of Patterns
    • Formula creation
    • Using and creating tables
    • Understanding sequences

8
Sample Student Lesson-
Patterns and Figures- Exhibit 2
  • Section A Summary student page 10
  • Deals with analyzing and generalizing dot patterns
  • Students are required to analyze the dot pattern and determine if a given formula for the pattern is accurate
  • Students are then required to create a dot pattern for a given formula
  • Finally, students are required to create a dot pattern sequence and write a formula for that sequence (Higher order thinking)

9
Discussion of activity-
What are its benefits?
  • Good informal assessment tool
  • Strong connection to standards
  • Assesses standard 2.8.8.B
  • Leads students to open-ended question which requires them to:
    • Create a dot pattern sequence
    • Generalize the pattern

10
Graphing Equations
  • Also a book in the 8th grade Scope and Sequence
  • Addresses PA Standard 2.8.8
  • Part of the Algebra Strand
  • Deals primarily with:
    • Graphing points and lines
    • Understanding slope
    • The equation of a line
    • Solving single variable equations

11
Sample Student Lesson-
Graphing Equations (Exhibit 3)
  • Section E Summary Student page 40
  • Students must solve three single variable equations.
  • These problems are solved by the students using:
    • Diagrams,
    • Number lines, or
    •  By performing operations on each side
12
Discussion of activity-
What are its benefits?
  • Good informal assessment tool
  • Easily mapped to standards
  • Assesses standard 2.8.8.E
  • Question allows for alternate approaches to the solution
    • Differentiated learning styles
    • Can challenge students to use more than one approach
